Subsurface Excellence

Nothing scheduled for this event    Download Brochure

The IPA Institute offers the Subsurface Excellence seminar to share Best Practices for defining the subsurface elements of asset development in E&P investments.  Unlike our E&P Project Best Practices course, this seminar focuses specifically on practices and work processes for subsurface (reservoir and well construction).  IPA research has shown that successful well program outcomes underpinned by excellent reservoir definition are the most critical determinants of return on investment in E&P developments.  This seminar integrates findings from IPA’s extensive quantitative research that links project management practices to project outcomes.  This research is based on IPA’s database of more than 1,200 E&P investments.

As the leading research-based consulting firm focusing on the development of tools and methods to improve capital effectiveness, IPA has determined the major factors that directly affect the relative performance of capital projects. Most excellent project systems—those that deliver excellent returns on capital spent—incorporate the fundamentals of these key leading indicators into their work processes for projects. The program will cover these factors.

Course Content and Organization

This 2-day seminar uses a combination of lecture, facilitated discussion, and case studies.  Research findings are communicated through lectures.  Participants share their experiences and relate learnings to their own experience through facilitated discussions.  Case studies allow participants to apply course learnings to real projects.

The training course is divided into a set of modules, each covering a specific topic important in the capital project delivery process. The modules include the following:

Module 1: Introduction

The course opens with introductory information about Independent Project Analysis and the IPA Institute and explains how the research presented can be implemented to drive improved capital effectiveness.

Module 2: The Link Between Project Outcomes and Project Drivers

This module presents the methodology to relate project drivers at authorization to project outcomes.

Module 3: Measuring Development Well Program Effectiveness

Module 3 shares key elements of well definition, including fluids characteristics, seismic information, and reservoir design basis.

Module 4: Introduction to Front-End Loading (FEL)

The topic of discussion is a stage-gated approach to Front-End Loading and FEL efficiency and effectiveness.

Module 5: Upstream FEL Indices

Various FEL indices, such as reservoir, facilities, pipeline, asset and wells are covered, along with the deliverables needed to reach a Best Practical level of definition for the preceding.

Module 6: Drivers of Well Performance

Module 6 presents an evaluation of wells programs in two aspects: the whole depletion program matched to the reservoir complexity; and program effectiveness irrespective of the alignment between reservoir and the depletion program.

Module 7: The Book-End Effect in E&P Assets

The course concludes with a discussion on sequencing activities for effective definition and incorporating the “book-end effect,” which links key decisions and actions early in asset development to project outcomes.

Target Audience

This seminar is intended for individuals who would benefit from a course on Best Practices and key learnings for the subsurface elements of asset development in E&P investments.

Benefits

The "Subsurface Excellence" course provides a forum to discuss the factors that lead to competitive project outcomes and offers the following benefits:

  • Learning practices that reduce cost growth and improve production attainment
  • Defining the project to best meet business needs, goals, and strategies
  • Quantifying the importance of using a gated work process for wells development programs
  • Identifying the key elements of wells, reservoir, and asset definition
  • Understanding and managing risks
  • Applying learnings from IPA's extensive research on actual projects to improve your ongoing and future projects
  • Networking with other project professionals
