Best Practices for Mining Projects integrates findings from IPA’s extensive quantitative research that links project management practices to project outcomes. This training can be integrated with companies’ project management work process, allowing industry Best Practices to be incorporated into the project system. The course will identify effective strategies for the following: defining mining and minerals project that best meet business needs, building an effective team, implementing contracting strategy, improving the business value, implementing technology improvements, understanding and managing risks, setting and achieving competitive targets, controlling a project as it progresses through execution and planning and scheduling projects. Best Practices for Small and Plant Projects

22 Professional Development Units - PMI

Best Practices for Small and Plant Projects is a 3-day training course that focuses on capital project planning and execution in the context of small and plant-based capital projects. Organizations spend between 30 to 65 percent of their capital budgets on small projects (less than US $10 million). IPA research has found that these small projects are frequently less successful than the larger projects executed by the same company. These small and plant projects are a mix of maintenance, regulatory, and revenue-generating projects. Both central project groups and plant-based project groups execute these small projects. This program is registered with the Project Management Institute (PMI), allowing attendees to easily claim 22 Professional Development Units (PDUs) upon completion of the course.

Capital Project Delivery Excellence in Australia is a 2-day training course that presents key learnings and Best Practices for project planning and execution. The course is taught from the perspective of owner organizations that plan and execute capital projects. IPA maintains proprietary upstream and downstream databases of projects executed by more than 200 companies. These IPA databases have detailed information for approximately 200 megaprojects. IPA uses these databases to conduct quantitative research that is focused on the drivers of project success. Exploration and Production Project Best Practices

The IPA Institute offers the Exploration and Production Project Best Practices course for oil and gas exploration and production projects. Unlike our regular Project Management Best Practices program, this course focuses specifically on the practices and work processes related to the success of capital investments in exploration and production (E&P). The program incorporates subsurface and offshore issues into the current project management program. Like the standard Project Management Best Practices program, the E&P Project Best Practices course is designed to provide participants with Best Practices and learnings that have been shown to improve capital effectiveness. This program is registered with the Project Management Institute (PMI), allowing attendees to claim 22 Professional Development Units (PDUs) upon completion of the course.

Gatekeeping for Capital Project Governance

Far too many capital projects do not achieve the desired business outcomes. These investments fail to meet their targeted returns either by exceeding the expected cost and schedule targets, failing to operate as expected and, in the worst cases, being the wrong investment to meet the business need. Gatekeeping for Capital Project Governance provides a better understanding of what business people need to do to aid capital projects in achieving their objectives. This curriculum will improve the interface between business and engineering to better align project execution with business strategy. The program will provide business people with a set of questions they can ask to ensure a project meets business needs, methodologies for making changes when needed, and an understanding of the relationship between business decisions and project outcomes. Practices for Shorter, More Cost-Effective Turnarounds helps improve how organizations implement their turnaround projects by presenting key learnings and Best Practices for turnaround planning and execution. Findings are based on quantitative analysis of over 325 turnarounds executed worldwide, and represent a wide cross-section of the chemical and petrochemical industries. The program presents practices from IPA's quantitative research into the drivers of turnaround effectiveness as measured by: safety, shorter duration, smoother startups, lower capital and maintenance costs and more predictable costs and schedules. Subsurface Excellence

The IPA Institute offers the Subsurface Excellence seminar to share Best Practices for defining the subsurface elements of asset development in E&P investments. Unlike our "Exploration and Production Project Best Practices" course, this seminar focuses specifically on practices and work processes for subsurface (reservoir and well construction). IPA research has shown that successful well program outcomes underpinned by excellent reservoir definition are the most critical determinants of return on investment in E&P developments. This seminar integrates findings from IPA’s extensive quantitative research that links project management practices to project outcomes. This research is based on IPA’s database of more than 1,200 E&P investments.
